How Lime Sulphur Works

It works as a valuable dormant season spray to reduce carry over burden of mites and fungal populations. By inhibiting the growth of fungal spores and mycelium, Kendon Lime Sulphur helps protect plants from infection and reduces the spread of diseases. It likely reacts chemically and non- specifically, with thiol and other reactive groups on amino acids and enzymes, resulting in disruption of respiration and other cellular functions.

What is lime sulphur and what does it do?

Lime sulphur is a solution of calcium polysulphide used to manage fungal diseases and insect pests on a range of crops. It works by targeting spores and overwintering insects, offering both preventive and curative benefits.
Yes, lime sulphur is suitable for use on fruit and vegetable crops when applied according to the label. Always observe the withholding period before harvesting.
No, both terms refer to the same product. “Sulphur” is the Australian and UK spelling, while “sulfur” is used in the US.
Application frequency depends on the crop and pest. For dormant spraying, one application in winter is typical. For in-season use, follow the directions in the application table above.
Yes, Kendon Lime Sulphur is suitable for use in organic production systems.
Do not apply lime sulphur within two weeks of using an oil spray, except where specifically indicated. According to the compatibility guidelines, lime sulphur may be mixed with Kendon White Oil, but only for use on pome and stone fruit during the dormant to semi-dormant stages. For safe and effective use of this mixture, always consult the label instructions for Kendon White Oil. Lime sulphur is generally best used alone and should not be mixed with other garden chemicals unless the product label states it is safe to do so.
Avoid contact with skin and eyes. When preparing the spray and using the prepared spray, wear elbow length PVC gloves and face shield or goggles. After use and before eating, drinking or smoking, wash hands, arms and face thoroughly with soap and water. After each days use, wash gloves and face shield or goggles and contaminated clothing. Avoid inhaling spray, and keep away from children and pets. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Shake the container well before use, always use clean, non-acidic water, and prepare only enough spray mixture for the day’s work so it is used on the same day it is mixed. Refer to the application guide table and the product label for crop-specific rates, spray volumes and timing, and always follow the full directions for use on the pack.
Do not apply lime sulphur during the growing period of apricots, raspberries, cucurbits, peaches or other sulphur-sensitive plants, and avoid using it when freezing weather is predicted. For best results, spray in the cool of the day, do not apply within two weeks of an oil spray unless specifically allowed on the label, and always follow the restraints and cautions listed on the product label before use.
