What is Grafting Mastic and what is it used for?

Grafting Mastic is a waterproof sealing medium for horticultural purposes. It is particularly suitable for sealing grafts, treating large tree wounds, and root grafting of nursery trees. Kendon produces two formulations — Grafting Mastic BZ and Grafting Mastic H — each suited to different climate conditions and seasons.
Both products create a pliable wax seal impervious to water, but they are formulated for different conditions:
  • Grafting Mastic BZ is a soft, waterproof sealing medium specifically formulated for cold to moderate climates and designed for use in winter. It is ready to use without any heating — the label states DO NOT heat.
  • Grafting Mastic H is a waterproof sealing medium suited to general horticultural use. It must be warmed (not melted) in a water bath until pliable before application.
Choose Grafting Mastic BZ for winter grafting in cold to moderate climates; use Grafting Mastic H when a warmable, brush-applicable wax is preferred.
The object of grafting is to improve a particular tree or shrub by uniting a portion of it — the scion — with the stock of the same or similar species of plant. The principle of grafting consists of placing the cambium layers of the two cut surfaces so closely together that they join and grow as one. This is achieved by excluding air and water, which is the role Grafting Mastic plays in the process.
Grafting can be performed at any time when the stock is in a dormant state, but it is more successful immediately prior to the commencement of early spring growth. The stock should be at a growth stage in advance of the scion. This is normally achieved by cutting the scions some weeks before grafting and keeping them in soil until required. When used, cut scions into 10–15cm lengths.

Grafting Mastic H can be applied using a brush while the product is still warm, or alternatively worked in the hands and applied directly to the graft.
Grafting Mastic BZ can be readily worked around the grafts by the fingers. In both cases, thorough coverage of all cut edges is required to ensure complete exclusion of air and moisture.
Do not use excessive quantities of Grafting Mastic, otherwise results may be impaired. Apply only enough product to thoroughly seal all cut edges of the graft or binding material — the goal is complete exclusion of air and moisture, not a heavy build-up of wax.
