Application Guide

Crop & Situation Disease State Rate Critical Comments
Avocado Phytophthora Root Rot QLD, NSW, VIC, SA, WA Trunk injection — skeletal trees:
1st year: 7.5mL undiluted product per metre of canopy diameter

Other situations:
3.75mL of product diluted with 7.5mL water per metre of canopy diameter

Foliar spray:
5–6 L/ha
Inject trees at spring flush maturity; repeat treatment in February or March.

Drill holes 5mm in diameter and 25–50mm deep, with slight downhill angle in the trunk. Syringes should be placed in the main trunk of the tree and spaced evenly around the circumference.

Suitable for use with injectors, Ag-muri gun or hydraulic tree injection.

Do not prune back trees before injection as burning of new growth may occur. Do not inject trees in winter months. Do not cut back the canopy of injected trees. Do not add any material other than water to Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide for tree injection. Do not inject more liquid in a lesser number of syringes than directed.

Solution concentrate: 2.5–3mL/L
Amount per unit: Spray to run off — 7.5 to 10 L per adult tree.
1. Curative: apply every 3 weeks until disease is under control.
2. Preventative: apply every 5–6 weeks.
Young or Small Citrus Phytophthora Root & Collar Rot All States 2.5–5mL to leaf wetness by boom or similar high volume sprayer Two applications:
1. Late winter prior to flowering.
2. Autumn applied to mature fruit.

Repeat applications annually to maintain protection. Removal of fruit from affected plant will assist recovery depending on conditions at time of application.

Use a suitable wetter in conjunction with Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide.
Mature Citrus
  • Well Established
  • High Disease Incidence / Poor Drained Soil
  • Low Phytophthora Pressure / Well Drained Soil
Phytophthora Root & Collar Rot All States High disease incidence / poor drainage:
20 L/ha in 3000–4000 L of water
75mL/12 L — tree

Low Phytophthora pressure / well drained:
12.5 L/ha in 2000–5000 L of water
50mL/12 L — tree
For effective control apply as a protectant before above ground symptoms of decline and collar rot become evident. Spray trees for even coverage.

Do not apply under high temperatures (above 35°C) particularly if humidity is low or to moisture stressed trees.

Warning: Young container grown mandarin trees may develop leaf burn and growth restriction following foliar application or soil drench at a rate recommended for established trees.
Subterranean Clover Phytophthora Root Rot NSW, VIC, TAS, SA, WA 750mL/ha Apply 8–9 days after first irrigation but before second irrigation. Apply in Autumn when subterranean clover is at the cotyledon to unifoliate leaf growth stage.

Withholding Period: DO NOT graze or feed livestock for 14 days after treatment.
Grapes Downy Mildew All States 300mL/100 L of water
3 L/ha
It is essential that the rate of Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide is adjusted to the vine-row volume (i.e. the volume of vine foliage per hectare). Spray timing is critical.

For best results, apply as a tank mix with protectant fungicides such as Mancozeb, Copper Oxychloride etc. to ensure both pre and post infection activity. Apply at times of high disease risk, especially between the time that conditions are conducive to downy mildew infection and the appearance of oil spots.

Ensure spray coverage is adequate and that the appropriate rate is applied to match vine growth, particularly from midseason onwards.

Note: Apply as close as possible to the day of infection and alternate with other systemic fungicides.

DO NOT apply after growth stage E-L 33.
Ornamentals Phytophthora Root & Collar Rot All States except SA 2.5mL/L — boom or knapsack
5mL/L — airblast
Apply at 4–6 weekly intervals when conditions favour disease development.

To avoid phytotoxicity with some plant species, it is recommended that the product be tested on a few plants of each species prior to main application.
Pineapple Phytophthora Root Rot QLD & WA 6 L/ha in 1200–1500 L of water Apply to tops 2 weeks prior to harvest of planting material.
Cucurbits Downy Mildew All States 3 L/ha in minimum 800–1000 L of water Use weekly spray intervals when conditions favour disease development.

To avoid phytotoxicity with some plant species, it is recommended that the product be tested on a few plants of each species prior to the main application.

Apply Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide by foliar spray, trunk injection or boom application following the Application Guide above. Always download and read the current product label before use and follow all regulatory and safety instructions.

Withholding Period:

  • Subterranean Clover: DO NOT graze or feed livestock for 14 days after treatment.
  • All other crops: Not required when used as directed.

What is Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide and what diseases does it control?

Phos Phyt 400 is a systemic fungicide effective against Phytophthora diseases and downy mildew in various situations as per the Directions for Use. It is registered for use in avocado, citrus, grapes, subterranean clover, ornamentals, pineapple and cucurbits.
Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide contains 400g/L phosphorous (phosphonic) acid, present as mono (and) di potassium phosphite. It is a Group 33 fungicide (Multi-site Activity group).

Phos Phyt 400 can be applied by foliar spray, boom spray, airblast, knapsack or trunk injection depending on the crop and situation. Application methods, rates and timing vary by crop — refer to the Application Guide on this page for full details.

Always download and read the current product label before use. This product is not to be used for any purpose or in any manner contrary to the label unless authorised under appropriate legislation.

Yes. Phos Phyt 400 is registered for control of Phytophthora Root Rot in avocado in QLD, NSW, VIC, SA and WA. It can be applied by trunk injection or foliar spray. Trunk injection rates differ between first-year skeletal trees and other situations. For foliar application, it can be applied curatively every 3 weeks until disease is under control, or preventatively every 5–6 weeks. Full rates and injection instructions are in the Application Guide on this page.
Yes. Phos Phyt 400 is registered for control of Downy Mildew in grapes in all states at 300mL/100L of water (3L/ha). The rate must be adjusted to the vine-row volume, and spray timing is critical. It should be applied as close as possible to the day of infection and alternated with other systemic fungicides. For best results, apply as a tank mix with protectant fungicides such as Mancozeb or Copper Oxychloride. DO NOT apply after growth stage E-L 33.
Yes. The label specifies the following key restraints:
  • Do not apply to avocado trees in winter months.
  • Do not prune back avocado trees before the injection process, as burning of new growth may occur.
  • Do not cut back the canopy of injected avocado trees.
  • Do not add any material other than water to Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide for tree injection.
  • Do not inject more liquid in a lesser number of syringes than directed.
  • Do not apply to grapes after growth stage E-L 33.
  • Do not apply to mature citrus under high temperatures (above 35°C), particularly if humidity is low or to moisture stressed trees.
  • Do not graze or feed livestock on subterranean clover for 14 days after treatment.
  • Do not contaminate streams, rivers or watercourses with the chemical or used containers.
The label advises that to avoid phytotoxicity with some plant species, it is recommended that the product be tested on a few plants of each species prior to the main application. This applies to both ornamentals and cucurbits. Additionally, young container grown mandarin trees may develop leaf burn and growth restriction following foliar application or soil drench of Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide at a rate recommended for established trees.
Phos Phyt 400 Systemic Fungicide is a member of the Multi-site Activity group of fungicides and is classified as a Group 33 fungicide. Some naturally occurring individual fungi resistant to the product and other Group 33 fungicides may exist through normal genetic variability in any fungal population. If these fungicides are used repeatedly, resistant individuals can eventually dominate the fungal population, resulting in a reduction in efficacy and possible yield loss. For grapes in particular, the label recommends alternating Phos Phyt 400 with other systemic fungicides to reduce resistance risk.
Phos Phyt 400 may irritate the eyes and skin. Avoid contact with eyes and skin, and wash hands after use. The product causes serious eye irritation (GHS statement).
